Module 3 Reflection Blog

My project is geared towards revising the abstinence-only based sex education curriculum that is currently available to Texas middle and high school students. The revised curriculum will include comprehensive sex education plus abstinence.

My philosophy for this program is:
Every student has a need for and a right to obtain sexual health education in order to make healthy decisions in an environment that is safe, non-judgemental and respectful.

  1. Hi DeAundre,
I am doing a similar project and think that the philosophy should always include the input of parents and the community with this topic.
    Thanks,
    Shana

  2. I agree with you, and I am totally with you allowing the parents to be involved, but the parents and community have failed to provide such information to the students. They are the ones who have hindered progress along with the government, to provide such needed information to our kids. That's why I purposefully did not include them in my philosophy. If comprehensive sex education was mandated by the state and had to be part of the students curriculum, then we probably would not be in the pickle that we are in now, with HIV rates soaring, teenage pregnancy soaring and sexaully transmitted infection rates continuing to be a problem. Maybe, just maybe the parents should be excluded this go round?!
